UK Baby & Children’s Size Guide
Buying handmade clothing can feel a little different to shopping the high street — especially when garments are created using sewing patterns from different countries. This guide explains how our sizing works, how international pattern sizing differs from UK sizing, and how to choose the best fit with confidence.
Understanding UK Children’s Clothing Sizes
In the UK, children’s clothing sizes are generally based on average age, but every child grows differently.
That’s why we always recommend using body measurements rather than age alone when choosing a size.
Our finished garments are listed on the website in UK children’s sizing standards, even when international sewing patterns are used.
Handmade Clothing & Pattern Origins
Some of our garments are made using professional sewing patterns from the UK, USA, and Australia.
Pattern sizing is not altered or regraded to UK standards. Instead, we provide clear UK conversion charts so customers can select the correct size based on measurements.
Because international pattern sizing can differ from UK age-based sizing, we strongly recommend checking the conversion chart and measurements provided rather than relying on age alone. This approach ensures transparency and consistency across our collections, regardless of where the original pattern was designed.
How US & Australian Sizes Differ from UK Sizes
Understanding the differences can help explain why checking measurements is so important:
🇬🇧 UK Sizing
- Based on average age
- Generally more fitted
- Length and chest tend to be slightly smaller than US/AUS equivalents
🇺🇸 US Sizing
- Often runs larger and longer
- Designed with extra growing room
- Age labels can appear bigger than UK sizes
🇦🇺 Australian Sizing
- Similar to US sizing
- Typically allows more ease and length
- Can feel roomier compared to UK fits
📌 Important: Even though some of our patterns originate from the US or Australia, we convert all sizing to align with UK measurements and provide UK size charts on every listing.
How Our Handmade Clothing Fits
Because our garments are handmade:
- Each item is cut and sewn individually
- Fabric choice affects stretch and drape
- Fit may vary slightly by style (rompers, dresses, leggings)
This is normal for handmade clothing and part of what makes each piece special.
Where relevant, listings will note if a garment has:
- A relaxed fit
- A true-to-size fit
- A more fitted cut
When Should I Size Up?
You may wish to size up if:
- Your child is between sizes
- Your child is tall for their age
- You prefer longer wear
- The garment will be layered
- You are buying for a future date or special occasion
For seasonal or event outfits, we always recommend sizing for when the item will be worn, not the order date.
Measuring for the Best Fit
For best results:
- Measure your child wearing light clothing
- Focus on chest and garment length
- Compare measurements to the size chart in the listing
Age is a guide — measurements are more reliable.

Returns & Sizing Disclaimer
Many of our items are made to order, so we strongly recommend checking measurements carefully before purchasing.
Please note:
Sizing differences or fit preference do not qualify as a fault. Made-to-order items are not eligible for return unless faulty, in line with UK consumer regulations.
This size guide is provided to help you order with confidence and reduce the risk of incorrect sizing.
Helpful Reminder
